EFL/ESL Booksellers in Japan

While most of the larger bookstores in Japan carry a handful of English language teaching text books, or course books, it can be a real challenge to find anywhere with a comprehensive selection of ELT resources, even in and around Tokyo. Below is a list of stores/companies that sell course books as well as other ELT materials for those teaching English in Japan.

Note: Remember most companies can ship your books to you for a small fee. From experience average delivery times are about a week but please check with the company/bookstore beforehand.

Nellie's English Books Map

Nellie's English Books
One station from Akihabara, Nellie's offers textbooks and components from the major ELT (English Langauage Teaching) publishers in Japan. Usually have items in stock as their warehouse is above the shop. Staff are friendly and able to offer advice on suitable coursebooks for your classes. Also have classroom resources for young learners, a wide selection of graded readers and seasonal materials.

Most purchases qualify for at least 10% discount off recommended prices.

Maruzen Marunouchi Map

Maruzen Marunouchi
Located in a new shopping and restaurant arcade on the north west side of Tokyo Station and linked by underground passage Maruzen has a great selection of imported English language books available on the 4th floor. On the ESL/EFL side the range of titles available is fairly comprehesive and although stock levels aren't high and there's no discount it's a good place to grab a single copy of a textbook you need in a hurry. They also stock a few children's resources and a great selection of imported children's books meaning that it's difficult to leave without buying something. You have been warned!

www.eltbooks.com
A collaboration between David English House and eigotown.com this mail order only service is based in Hiroshima. They say they can find any book published by a foreign ELT publisher and sold in Japan so don't be put off if their online catalogue doesn't have what you're looking for. Just fill in the order form and they'll get it for you. Turnaround times are surprisingly quick and the ordering system is professional and efficient. The payment system is by an invoice payable by the end of the following month through either a bank account or post office leaving you plenty of time to collect the textbook costs from your students.

ETJ members (free to join at the time of ordering) receive 15% discount on all orders.
