let's go on a picnic
With the weather getting warmer we thought it an excellent time to introduce a
craft with a picnic theme. We've kept the craft as simple as possible so that all
children, whatever their age and ability, can participate and feel a sense of achievement.
Basket Template
There are three basket designs to choose from.

For best results print onto thick paper. For younger learners you might need to pre-cut the templates before your class.
Picnic Flashcards
1. Print off one copy for each child.
2. Point and check they know the vocabulary as some of it may be unfamiliar.
3. Using color pencils, invite the children to color each item. Discuss with them
why they chose a particular color for that item.
4. Once colored cut out the picnic flashcards (again dependent on age/ ability
you might need to help at this point.)
For older or more able children: we have left a blank space under each picture so
that they can label each card. Another idea may be to take some blank paper and
have the children draw their own items.
The Activity
Use the completed picnic baskets and flashcards to stimulate conversation
between the students. For example you could pretend to be going on a real picnic
and have the students decide which 5 items they want to bring. Other ideas
include swapping items between students, shopping for items etc...
Download the Picnic Package
We've bundled the whole picnic basket activity into a free easy to download Adobe file. The package includes the picnic flashcards,
3 basket templates, a full instructions. To download the file please click here (PDF 444KB.)
