Christmas Craft: Pop up Christmas Card

For those of you based in Japan you'll probably be aware that the custom of giving and recieving Christmas cards is virtually unheard of amongst Japanese. As a cultral point this easy to make pop-up Christmas card scores big and is also a lot of fun to make with your young learners.

First you'll need to gather your materials which are as follows:

  1. Construction/heavy coloured paper (preferrably in Christmas colours.)
  2. Glue
  3. Scissors
  4. Pens/glitter for decoration

Pop-up Christmas card step 1

Step 1

Take a sheet of coloured paper or heavy white paper about A4 size or smaller and fold in half as shown, and flatten the crease. This will be our finished card shape.

Step 2

While still folded make four cuts perpendicular to the crease line, about 5cm long and 1cm wide to make two supports. See diagram.

Step 3

Open the card up and push out the supports, (young children will need help with this step.) Smooth flat the card.

Step 5

Using coloured scraps make a snowman and a Christmas tree, you may need to play around with the sizing to make sure they fit in the card when closed.

Step 4

Glue the finished snowman and Christmas tree onto the supports. Add a message and there you have it, a great Christmas card for your children to take home.

Variation Idea: Instead of a snowman and a Christmas tree you make a santa and a reindeer card. The background could also be improved by creating a snowy landscape and winter night.
