Valentine Craft Ideas
This is a 'feast day' that is celebrated both in
Japan and back home.
Although at a first
glance they may seem the same, many of the
customs turn out to be very different.
In Japan
it's the females who give presents (usually
chocolate) to the males. And we're not just
talking about giving presents to their partners
but also work colleagues, friends, teachers etc
in the form of giri-choco (義理チョコ) which
translates as obligation chocolate. By the way
the real deal are called honmei-choco (本命
チョコ.) I'll leave it to you to figure out how to tell
the difference!
The process is all repeated on
White Day (ホワイトデー),March 14th, but this time it's the
males who give presents of white chocolates to the
females in their lives. Why white chocolate I
hear you ask? Well, to stop the males returning the
gifts they got on Valentine's day of course!
So now you can't say you didn't know!
Below you'll find a couple of easy ideas to bring Valentine's Day into your children's classes.
The beauty of this card is that it's so easy but the end result never fails to impress the mothers.
It's easiness means that it can be used across the board from 'with mom' classes to elementary school aged children. You can decide how much you want the children to do, or are able to do.
To make the hearts
Simply cut some pink and red construction paper into 5-8 cm strips. Fold length ways and using a pair of scissors cut one half of a heart shape.
Hey presto! You end up with perfectly symmetric hearts. |

To make the card
Take a sheet of paper, I've often just used standard A4 copy paper fold it in half, flatten the crease, and then fold in half again to give you small but stout card. |
Take the perfectly symmetrical hearts and paste them to the front of card in any design you like. Write 'Happy Valentine' on the front and add a message inside...
...all you have to decide who to give it to!

On the the pdf link at the top of the page you'll find templates for the Valentine Coupons. Print or copy the sheet and cut out the coupons. Hand one to each child and get them to color/ decorate the coupon. Help them write what their offer is, for example:
wash the dishes, set the table, clean my room, help with cooking etc.
Of course you could let the children have more than one coupon...
